Opps... I forgot to make a post over the weekend I like I promised I would. You want to guess what I was doing. Yep working on that thesis and I still am. I am getting down to the wire so I have been spending more time on it. It is just crazy but I am also most done writing. After writing then I have to clean up my lab area, format my thesis so it can be electronically submitted, oh and sell a whole bunch of things and PACK.
The biggest news is that I have purchased my flight to Denmark. I leave the US on October 26th, arrive in Copenhagen on the 27th (early afternoon).
Well it is back to my thesis. I promise to do better about this consistency thing.
I was offered the opportunity to study genetics and biotechnology as a PhD student at an agriculture research facility in Denmark. Now I could of studied this research area in the United States, but I felt that this was unique opportunity that I could not pass up. On Nov 1st 2010, I moved to Denmark for a three year PhD position. This blog is to document my experience and to update my friends and family on how I am doing.

Consistency
I have decided that I will write something on this blog every weekend instead of sending people an email that I have updated the blog. Sometimes the post will be really short because I will be busy but at least I will be consistent.
Many people are asking, “What can we do to help with your move?” or “What can we send you to help you move?” At the time when these questions were asked I did not have a good answer. I have now had some time to think this over and I here are my answers.
“What can we do to help you move?”
Moving to Denmark is not going to be that hard or that expensive since the university is giving me furniture (look back at the first post). The most expensive thing is going to be packing and storing all my stuff here in the States. All the furniture, boxes etc need to be placed on palettes. To protect the furniture it is recommend covering them with sheets or some sort of cover. Items I want to protect well need to be in large tubs that seal. For example all the photos, paintings and drawings that were giving to me by my sister and other family members need to be in these large tubs.
So if you want to help me move please help me find, palettes, large plastic sealing tubs or large sheets to cover my furniture. I have not had a chance to get check goodwill very often so if you find something that will help me out let me know what you found. I appreciate your help.
“What can we send you to help you?”
A few family members have asked what can we send you to help. Well of course you can always send money. =) If you feel inclined to send something I would say gift cards for JCPenny’s or dry package food, for example trail mix or macaroni. In Denmark it is customary to wear business or business casual clothes; well my closet is full of basic causal clothes and since clothes in here are so much cheaper I want to buy plenty of clothes here. The dry package food is for when I get to Denmark it will take some time for me to get used to the change in food, so while I learn to transition the dry food that I packed in my suitcase while help. Of course because of the TSA it has to be well-packaged dry food, no fruit or vegetables.
BUT the one thing I would really like is your words of encouragement and your prayers and thoughts. Moving to Denmark, especially the first three to four months will be very stressful so knowing that there is many people behind me helps a lot.
Thank you for all your love and support.

I need to learn to pack like this.
Again I am wasting time and not working on my thesis. But I found this video and I will not describe what this video is about. All I am going to say it that: I need to learn to pack like this because then I can take EVERYTHING to Denmark. =)
Just click on the title and the video will open in a new window or tab.

Update on moving to Denmark
Well I am taking a break from writing my thesis and I am now writing on my “Adventure” blog. Many things have happened since my last post. First I sent my application for a visa, which was 14 pages long!! At least seven of the pages were filled out by Aarhus University. The worst part of the whole visa application was the $300 money order.
I was expecting it to take at least two months for my passport to be mailed back. I was really surprised three weeks later with an 8 am knock at the door from the Fed Ex guy with my passport and visa. The visa is a sticker on one of passport pages, with passport pictures and many different colors, and what looks like the Denmark National Seal on the side the visa.
The next thing that happened is that I have pushed back the date I start to November 1st because I needed more time to finish personal and professional items. Professionally I need more time to finish my thesis; personally I still need to sell many things including my car, and I need to move items to a climate-controlled storage in the area.
Recently the newest thing is that the secretary from Aarhus University was so helpful and found me a place to live in Slagelse. (This woman has been so helpful; I really have to think of a good gift for her.) The secretary thought this was a great place for me to get used to the area and find a bigger place. She said it is hard to find a bigger place while only looking on the Internet, and instead I can live here while actually looking for a bigger place and I agree with her.
So I have a small two-bedroom apartment in Slagelse, with my own kitchen, and bath. The only thing that everyone I talk to wants to know is how does a two-bedroom apartment fit in 420 square feet? Yep you read that right the two-bedroom apartment I am moving into is only 420 square feet. I am very interested in seeing my new place since I do not have any pictures so far. I know in Europe things are smaller, I am guessing the kitchen, bath, bedroom will all be smaller.
Of course the lease has to be available only in Danish, but I have a great friend who was kind enough to type up the Danish lease and then do a machine (Google translate) translation. (You know who you are are, AND THANKS AGAIN!!) So the deposit for this small apartment is 10,688 Danish Krone (or about $2,400) and first month’s rent is 3,566 DKK (~$615). Well I told the secretary I do not have $3000 dollars available right now she said do not worry the accounting department will deduct the deposit and first month rent from my salary. The 3,566 DKK for rent includes heat, water and Tv. I will have to pay extra for electricity and internet service and the interesting thing about the electricity is that I will get a bill every three months instead of monthly in the states.
Now my mom has been asking for the address for my new apartment, well I have an idea what my address is but I am not exactly sure how is should be written. But I was able to find the address on Google maps and look at the small cute place I will be living, next to a park and not that far from the bus stop or the center of town.
I will keep you updated with any new that comes up. I am looking forward to my new adventure!!!!
